Caracana are an uplifting Nos Lowen or Cornish Ceilidh folk band, with music deriving from their native land of Cornwall, as well as Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Brittany, Galicia, Eastern Europe and tunes from their own compositions.
The spirit of Caracana is reflected in their name, which means ‘the love of music’ in the Cornish language. The group was first formed twenty years ago, and their heartfelt music has been enjoyed by audiences throughout Cornwall. They have also represented Cornwall at the Interceltic Lorient Festival in France and have been the support act for the much loved 60s folk group, The Incredible String Band, at The Eden Project.
Well known for playing a diverse range of folk, Caracana have become a sought after Ceilidh Band on the Cornish folk scene. Their music covers a wide range of genres and their close harmony singing is a delight to experience.
Pema Wainwright - (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Vocals & Percussion) - As a founding member of the band, Pema brings a youthful energy with her quirky percussion and mesmerising clarinet.
Frank Pickering - (Fiddle, Guitar & Vocals) - A singer/songwriter who embraced the Cornish revival, joining Caracana when he moved to Cornwall.
Anita Wells-Cock - (Double-Bass & Vocals) - A rare talent, performing in a number of bands throughout the county, we are lucky to have Anita on board and she is well loved by all.
Simon Tagney - (Guitar, Flute & Vocals) - Simon joined the group in 2018 when he moved down from Bristol and helps fill the backline beneath the winding melodies with cheerful strumming and occasional vocal and flute interludes.
Alastair Russell - (Guitar & Vocals) - With the band for over a decade, Alastair's driving rhythm is the metronome to Caracana's unique sound. Sadly Alastair is no longer with us as he passed away in 2017, we will remember him always.
Plus talented guest musicians and dancers.
Caracana love to perform for Cornish Ceilidhs (Nos Lowens), however, they are also delighted to play for weddings, parties, festivals and special events. Whether you want to get up and dance or you prefer a more intimate and personal experience, Caracana will have something for you in their diverse repertoire.
